Background

  • The Minneapolis Medical Research Foundation (MMRF) oversees the medical research that is conducted at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), an acute care research and teaching hospital.

  • MMRF is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization and is the third largest nonprofit medical research foundation in Minnesota.

  • Founded in 1952 at Minneapolis General Hospital (now HCMC), the MMR's mission is to improve patient care and the health of our community through research and education
    .
  • Throughout its history, the MMRF has been closely linked with strong patient care programs and the training and continuing education of physicians and scientists.

  • MMRF supports the work more than 200 investigators, including MDs, MD/PhDs, and PhDs, and administers approximately $15 million in research funds annually.

  • MMRF ranks in the top 11% nationally of all institutions receiving research funds from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

  • MMRF has active research programs in trauma, alternative medicine, cancer, clinical outcomes, chronic fatigue syndrome, children's issues, diabetes and metabolism, foods for well-being, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, kidney disease, liver and gastrointestinal disease, organ transplantation, sleep disorders, smoking cessation, and women's health.

Research Highlights

  • Information gathered by MMRF researchers on the diet drugs fen-phen and Redux was instrumental in the Food and Drug Administration pulling the drugs from the market.

  • MMRF researchers are currently working on a vaccine for nicotine addiction.

  • MMRF serves as the Coordinating Center for the United States Renal Data System (USRDS), the most comprehensive database in the world for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

  • MMRF investigators are internationally recognized for their research in sleep disorders.

  • MMRF investigators are at the forefront of angiogenesis research. Angiogenesis is a procedure that attempts to enhance the body's natural process of growing tiny arteries, called collaterals, where blood flow is limited.

  • “East meets west" at the MMRF in a current study that is testing the effectiveness of an herbal compound for treating symptoms of Hepatitis C.

  • MMRF researchers are part of the world's first full-scale test of a vaccine to prevent infection with the AIDS virus.

  • MMRF researchers are involved in studying an experimental trauma drug that may reduce the number of deaths from multiple organ failure.

  • MMRF has been awarded $12.6 million from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to help design and perform a historic study that will attempt to determine the best treatment for prevention of heart disease in persons with Type 2 diabetes.

  • The first kidney dialysis program in Minnesota began here.

  • The first kidney transplant in the Midwest was performed here.
