Golden Memories '99--Lake Superior and Minnesota
by Susan Beverley
Materials:
Acrylic paint, pine cone seeds, wild rice; stones, sand and drift
wood from Lake Superior; leaves--oak, maple, aspen and sumac.
Inspiration: Susan's inspirations for this piece are
many: African art, the beauty and power of nature, the gift of sight,
family and memories. She wanted to acknowledge the mask format--using
this motif to celebrate the natural beauty of Minnesota, Lake Superior,
special times with my children and membories of life events. The
stones--gathered with my children on the shores of Lake Superior--are
worn smooth by the power of the waves and bring to mind the sound
of the waves, the wind, seagulls, and children's laughter. The leaves,
wild rice, and seed cones pay tribute to the beauty and abundance
of nature in Minnesota as the earth transitions from summer to fall.
The golden outline of leaves suggests shared moments with my children
experiencing Minnesota's natural beauty and the shared moments that
will remain long after the leaves have blown away. On another level
this piece is about sight--the ability to see the beauty of nature,
my children's enjoyment of it and witnessing these events to commit
them to memory and being able to recall these moments. Susan used
natural objects against a green and gold background: green for nature,
gold for golden memories with a light dusting of gold over all to
unify water, earth, and air--actions, thoughts, and memories.
About the Artist: Susan has studied at the
Art Institute of Chicago, the University of MN, and graduated from
the University of WI--Stevens Point with a degree in Studio Arts.
She has participated in many shows in the past. Currently, she resides
in the Twin Cities with her children and works in the healthcare
sales industry.

requirements of fine art.

Sun Drops
by Alvaro Barrios Sarmiento
Materials:
Mixed media.
Inspiration: Among some precolumbian cultures there
existed an ancient myth that gold came from the tear drops of the
sun. In keeping with the theme of the golden hour, Alvao selected
the hourglass to measure time that can mean the difference between
life and the loss of it. Gold is a metal that we hold precious just
like the essence of life. The hourglass symbolizes the passing of
time and at times mortality. Just as in life the hourglass must
be in constant motion to continue functioning.
About the Artist: Alvaro has a BA in Graphic
Design and a MFA in Fine Arts from Bogota, Columbia. He has had
exhibitions in Latin America. He presently works as a freelance
artist in Minneapolis, specializing in abstract art and photography.

working at Fairview University Medical Center in the Adolescent
Day Treatment Program. He often uses mask masking with his clients
