Research HistoryThe Center for Addiction and Alternative Medicine Research (CAAMR) was established in 1994 as part of a nationwide program of specialized complementary and alternative medicine research with a grant from the Congressionally mandated Office of Alternative Medicine (OAM). The OAM in 1998 became the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), a fully fledged research Center of the National Institutes of Health. It is responsible for ensuring quality scientific evaluation of the wide range of non-conventional therapies used by the American public. In 1998, the CAAMR won a $4.8 million competitive renewal of its funding through the NCCAM for an additional 5 years. |
