Curriculum
The
Center's curriculum is designed to build a common foundation and familiarity
with the full spectrum of complementary and alternative addiction medicine
among trainees while providing the formal background in established scientific
methodology necessary to study and evaluate complementary and alternative
medicine (CAM).
CAM Seminar.
Monthly lectures by invited outside speakers with expertise in some aspect
of CAM. The purpose of the seminar is to provide faculty and trainees
with an appreciation of the scope of CAM, with particular emphasis on
current research.
Psychopharmacology
Seminar. Center trainees participate in the ongoing weekly seminar
conducted by the University of Minnesota Program, "Training in Drug
Abuse and Neurobehavioral Pharmacology." This seminar has for many
years introduced its trainees to the basic principles of drug abuse, from
the molecular to the clinical, and to cutting edge concepts and technologies.
Participation in this seminar is critical to integrating CAM researchers
and the Center into the local drug abuse research community. Center trainees
will make presentations describing their research, thereby introducing
Psychopharmacology trainees and staff to CAM and opening opportunities
for information sharing and possible collaboration.
Medications
Development Seminar. Trainees attend the monthly seminar sponsored
by the University of Minnesota Medications Development Center. Local and
outside speakers review their research, describing the development of
medications for the treatment of drug abuse. This seminar is well attended
by drug abuse investigators in the Twin Cities.
Formal
Coursework. Coursework is individualized. Doctoral candidates are
required to satisfy departmental requirements for the doctoral degree.
Postdoctoral students and junior faculty lacking sufficient background
in these areas will be encouraged to take courses as needed.
Clinical
Rotations. Trainees are offered relevant clinical rotations providing
practical experience in the use of CAM therapies. The Hennepin Faculty
Associates Addiction Medicine Clinic and Methadone Maintenance Program,
which often incorporate CAM into treatment plans, share a building with
the MMRF research labs and will serve as the principal sites. Additional
outside experiences will be arranged as needed.
