Research HistoryThe Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) HIV/AIDS program has been treating patients with AIDS for more than 15 years and it sees more HIV-infected patients than any other clinic in Minnesota. The Hennepin AIDS/HIV Research Center (HARC) was started as an additional service to patients infected with this deadly disease. HARC provided patients opportunities to enroll in clinical trials where they had access to the newest therapies that were only available in a research setting. "Without it, we wouldnt have had access to promising new drugs to offer them," says Ron Schut, M.D., HARCs Medical Director. Dr. Schut has seen the number of drugs that physicians can administer to treat HIV/AIDS go from one (AZT) in 1989, to eight in 1996 and sixteen in 2000. This does not include the many drugs that are not approved by the FDA, but are currently being studied in clinical trials.
